The stair as the only hallway
We try to eliminate hallways wherever possible. Sometimes the stair is the only corridor a house needs.
Introduction
A hallway is square footage that does nothing except connect two rooms.
The Approach
When a plan allows it, we let the stair itself serve as the connective space — widened slightly, lit well, doing double duty as circulation and as a room in its own right.
The Trade-off
It only works on a plan considered from the start. Retrofitting a hallway into a stair rarely succeeds.
